Taking studio-like photos is the key to being successful in the photography world (Without the "studio-like" part). Being a photographer is fun and simple, here are all the steps you need:
First Off: What is Portrait Mode
You can use Portrait Mode that is provided on newer iPhones and Android devices. Third-party apps can also provide you with a similar portrait mode effect.
iPhone Portrait Mode
1. Open the default camera app
2. Swipe through the various effects along the bottom above the shutter button and select “Portrait”
3. Using portrait mode, your iPhone’s camera will automatically focus on your subject in the foreground
4. Aim your camera at your subject. It must be within two to eight feet from your phone. If you aren’t within these parameters, you will get “move further away” or “move closer” prompts accordingly
5. When portrait mode is in effect, a yellow box will appear on the screen. For iPhone 8 Plus and newer models, the box will read “natural light.” For the iPhone 7 Plus, “depth effect” will appear in the yellow box
6. If you see the “natural light” box, you can adjust lighting as necessary. Swipe through additional options such as studio light, contour light, stage light, and stage light mono
7. Snap your picture by pressing the shutter button
Viola! You have just shot a photo using Portrait Mode!
Feel free to continue and experiment with other lighting modes!
Portrait Mode on Android
1. Open the camera app
2. Select the menu button or swipe to choose the portrait option
3. Point your phone at the subject and take a picture with the shutter button
4. With some models, the blur is applied after the photo is taken
Congratulations! You just took a photo using Portrait Mode!
Go ahead and continue to experiment with other lighting modes!
